In 2008 Streeton will be home to a new Discovery Centre. The centre will be used by the Junior School (Preps, Grade ones and Grade twos). The centre allows students to learn through an inquiry based curriculum. An inquiry based curriculum allows children to be actively involved in their learning, and to revisit and redevelop their understandings as they experience more. The children will be encouraged to investigate, and explore ideas to seek further knowledge. The Discovery Centre integrates a variety of curriculum areas, such as visual arts, performance arts, role plays, science, writing, problem solving, maths, speaking and listening, reading, and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).

WHO AM I?

Here is an animal who am I for Grade Prep, One and Two. Be the first to guess the animal correctly and tell Mrs Johnson and win a special prize!

Who am I?

Beware of that log you see floating in the water. It has eyes and they belong to me. I am ferocious looking, but usually I am shy and will avoid you unless you disturb my nest. I can be 8 to 15 feet long, so the only predator I worry about is man. What am I?

Think carefully and let Mrs Johnson know!

Junior School Transport Rally Day

STOP!

Red means 'Stop'

These are the signs we saw...

On 17th June we had our Transport Rally Day. Children dressed up, some making fantastic costumes at home. We started our morning by going for a walk to spot traffic signs. It took a long time for everyone to cross at the traffic lights, but we did it safely. For the rest of the day we rotated activities. Some of the activities we did were making our own set of traffic lights, practise our driving and pedestrian skills by following road signs set out on the basketball court (thanks to the help of the 5/6s), and brainstorming all the signs we spotted on our walk.

Term 1, 2009

Under the Big Top

This term we have been investigating the circus. In the discovery centre we have had activities involving; painting a clown's silly face, creating an acrobatic performance, dressing up like clowns and ring masters, making a semetrical clown bow tie, making a clown's hat, making circus puppets and putting on a show, and building a circus ring full of animals.

"Juggling was easy, because I practised with the scarves" - Student Comment

"I painted a face with lots of colours" - Student comment

"The circus tent was fun. We were very silly clowns" - Student comment

"It was very hard to balance on the stilts" - Student comment.
